New Jersey State Board – Ancient Order of Hibernians in America
2023 Bi-Annual Convention State President O’Brien and his team continue!

The New Jersey State Boards of the Ancient Order of Hibernians held their bi-annual convention on May 19th and 20th.

The convention opened Friday, May 19th at the Col. David B. Kelly Division 1, Middlesex County AOH followed by an ice breaker with the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. The convention re-opened for business on Saturday at the APA Hotel in Woodbridge.

Richard S. O’Brien stated, I am happy to report that we had a successful two-day event covering AOH business and fellowship. Reports were given by each chairman, by-law changes took place, recruiting techniques were shared and several questions were asked and answered by membership and leadership.

Our featured speaker direct from Ireland was Máirtín Ó Muilleoir the publisher of the Belfast Media Group titles and of the Irish Echo in America. He has been involved in journalism for over four decades and has penned columns for both that the Andersonstown News and the former daily Irish language newspaper Lá. He is the author of several books in Irish and English including ‘Ceap Cuddles’ and ‘Belfast’s Dome of Delight’. He has served in politics for Sinn Féin both in Belfast City Council and in the power-sharing Executive at Stormont. 

As co-founder of events company Aisling Events, he has hosted a range of transatlantic conferences including the Big Irish Campfire, the New York-New Belfast Conference, and the Belfast International Homecoming. He is the proud recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, USA. 

Máirtín spoke about his youth in Northern Ireland and growing up there and then making a difference. He stressed the importance of the US and Northern Ireland relationships and how they are what is helping make positive change in the north!

I pledge for the next two years we focus on growing membership in New Jersey.  This is critical to keep the Order going!”

Jack Nosti Ocean 6 Division – Honorable Mention

Our brother who is always available for us! He managed our money, managed our conventions, authored our by-laws, presided over divisions, and never stopped!

John Hughes Passaic 16 Division – Corporal Michael Curtin Award

Brother Hughes, Chair of the Right to Life Committee, has impacted a young woman’s life. She came to Brother Hughes’ seeking spiritual support and through John’s care and compassion, a child’s life was spared. His steadfast faith, his love for every human life, and his commitment to others has truly made a change in a family’s life.

Wayne DeAngelo Mercer 10 Division – Volunteer Pat Torphy Award

Brother DeAngelo, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 10, Hibernians Foundation member Division 1, the Hamilton Elks Club #2262, the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, as well as Past President and soccer coach for the Hibernian Athletic Association demonstrates his commitment to Irish-America and the community he serves.

Wayne successfully proposed legislation that declared March “Irish American Heritage Month”.  Through his work with other legislators and Governor Murphy the legislation was signed.

Father Daniel G. Cahill Monmouth 2- McFaul-Mullen Award

This award celebrates Fr. Cahill’s 50th Anniversary of his Ordination as a priest. Fr. Cahill was ordained on June 17, 1973, in the Diocese of Trenton. Born in Killarney, Ireland, he has never forgotten his heritage or commitment to Irish-America. He serves as state chaplain of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, as he has for more than 25 years, and has been chaplain for the Monmouth County Ancient Order of Hibernians, and for 23 years was chaplain for the Bayside Council of the Knights of Columbus.

The next convention site is Hamilton, NJ home of Mercer 1 in 2025.  Details to be developed.
