2014Atlantic 1 Awards Scholarships
Five eighth grade students from local Catholic schools were awarded with $1,000 scholarships to attend various Catholic high schools throughout Atlantic County this upcoming fall. The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Atlantic County 1, Ofc. Thomas J. McMeekin Jr. Memorial Division, based out of St. Nicholas of Tolentine RC Church in Atlantic City, awarded the five students from around Atlantic County with their inaugural scholarships named after fallen Atlantic City Police Officer Thomas J. McMeekin Jr.
Daniel Bloh of St. Vincent de Paul and Claire Tuohy of Our Lady Star of the Sea will be attending Holy Spirit High School. Ethan Davis of St. Joseph’s (Somers Point), Matthew Talbot of St. Joseph’s (Hammonton), and Paul Biagi of St. Mary’s will be attending St. Augustine Prep.
George Moore, the Division Vice President and Scholarship Fundraiser Chairman, put together a fantastic fundraiser last June to initiate the scholarship fund. According to Jim House, Division President, the A.O.H. and its members are looking to host a similar fundraiser in late September or early October of this year. The effect that the scholarship has had on these students and their families should not be understated, and the overwhelmingly positive response from the parents, students, and participating schools has been truly amazing.
