20136th Annual Gael Scoil
Mercer 10 will host the 6th Annual Gael Scoil on February 23rd and 24th, 2013 at the Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, NJ.
Gael Scoil is a full filled two day program offering children ages 6-17 an immersive tour of Ireland through its people, their history, culture, and environment.
Our goal in creating the Gael Scoil is to offer young people of all faiths and cultures an opportunity to learn about Ireland and the Irish people. We believe we have captured a unique balance of professional teaching talent and a curriculum that offers students a taste of the rich history and the wonderful culture of Ireland.
Classes, which will start at 8:30 AM, will be one hour and Fifteen minutes long with 21 fifteen minute break in between. Students will be assigned to 21 group and each group will be assigned a chaperone or guide who will stay with them throughout the day until they are picked up. Classes end at 3:00.
Some of the subjects offered are:
Music – the bodhran, harp, fiddle, Lin whistle and bagpipes. Students will not only hear the music, they will learn about the instruments and their histories.
Culture – The oral tradition and its contribution to Irish history (including some storytelling by a seanachie) A look at Irish films dealing with tradition and folklore (film clips and then a discussion.)
Dance — Irish traditional dance, including Ceili or folk, as well as the better known stepdancing, which has reached new heights through Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, will be demonstrated by champion performers and the basic steps will be taught.
Sports – Hands on demonstration of Irish Football and Hurling.
Traditional Irish Food – Demonstration of making Irish soda bread and discussion.
Language – Students will learn the sounds of the Trish language and some vocabulary.
Tuition: $100 for the first child $75 for subsequent children Shirt and Lunch Included in Tuition
